Use this page to quickly check what you can change, improve, or recover on your character sheet.
Quick rule: Minor milestones mostly let you adjust your character. Significant milestones include a minor milestone and add skill growth. Major milestones include both and represent a major shift in power, identity, or the world.
Minor Milestone
Use these liberally to mark moment-by-moment changes in your character as a response to session events.
Choose one
You may do one of these
Swap two skill ranks, or replace one Average (+1) skill with a skill not currently on your sheet.
Change one stunt for a different stunt.
Buy a new stunt, if you have enough refresh. You cannot reduce refresh below 1.
Rename one aspect that is not your high concept.
Significant Milestone
Use these to mark growth and development of your character - this is them growing towards something each scenario.
Minor + growth
You gain all of these
Everything from a minor milestone.
Gain 1 skill point. Spend it now or save it for later.
Rename a severe consequence to begin recovery, if you have not already done so.
Major Milestone
Use these after a major arc has concluded - something significant has happened to change the world, and you should change too, or be left behind.
Significant + power
You gain these options
Everything from a significant milestone.
Gain 1 refresh. Keep it for more fate points, or use it to buy a stunt.
Rename your high concept, if your identity has changed.
Advance beyond the current skill cap, if your sheet supports it.
Rename an extreme consequence to move past its worst effects and make room to take another later.
Spending Skill Points
A skill point can buy a new skill at Average (+1), or raise an existing skill by one step. You still need to obey the campaign’s skill structure. If the improvement does not fit yet, bank the point and spend it later.
New capability
Buy a new Average (+1) skill if your character has learned something new or broadened their competence.
Deeper mastery
Raise an existing skill by one rank when the story supports that growth.
Banking is allowed
Save skill points if you need several points to make the improvement fit the skill structure.
Story comes first
Try to make changes that reflect what happened in play, not just what is mechanically optimal.
Consequences and Recovery
Milestones can help you rename consequences, which is how they begin to move from immediate harm into recovery, scars, lessons, or changed identity.
Minor milestone
You may rename a moderate consequence to start recovery, if you have not already done so.
Significant milestone
You may rename a severe consequence to start recovery, if you have not already done so.
Major milestone
You may rename an extreme consequence to show you have moved past its most debilitating effects.
Ask the GM
Consequence changes should fit the fiction: treatment, rest, forgiveness, training, magic, acceptance, or a changed sense of self.
